How to Reduce Your EMI and Total Loan Interest

A lower EMI and lower total interest are two different goals. Here is what each choice does.

Know the trade-off first

A longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises the total interest. A shorter tenure does the opposite. For a ₹10,00,000 loan at 9%, a 3-year loan costs about ₹1.45 lakh in interest and a 10-year loan about ₹5.20 lakh.

Ways to reduce what you pay

  1. Borrow less. A bigger down payment reduces the principal, and both the EMI and the interest fall.
  2. Prepay part of the loan. Extra payments go towards principal and cut interest. Check your lender's prepayment rules and any charges.
  3. Compare interest rates. Even a small difference matters over many years. Check the full cost, including fees.
  4. Choose the tenure on purpose. Pick the shortest tenure whose EMI is comfortable.
