About this tool
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. This calculator uses the standard WHO categories: below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is normal weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. BMI is a quick screening number only. It does not measure body fat or muscle, so athletes and people with a lot of muscle can get a high BMI without being overweight. For health decisions, speak to a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight in kg ÷ (height in metres × height in metres). For example, 65 kg at 170 cm gives 65 ÷ (1.7 × 1.7) = 22.5.
What is a normal BMI?
A BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is considered the normal range under the standard WHO categories used by this calculator.
Are the BMI categories different for Indians?
Some health guidelines for Asian populations use lower cut-offs, for example treating a BMI of 23 or more as overweight. This calculator uses the standard WHO ranges, so ask your doctor which range applies to you.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI does not separate muscle from fat and is not designed for children, pregnant women or competitive athletes. Treat it as a rough guide, not a diagnosis.
